Diversify your children’s music

Now that you have diversified your bookshelves, don’t forget to diversify your children’s music. Just like seeing and learning experiences of others through literature, you can also sing along with a diverse track list.

When I started my blog in 2015, I had the idea of using Hip Hop music to teach my kids simple concepts like counting, spelling, etc and I found out that I am not a record producer lol (click here to see some of those attempts) HOWEVER, I that did not deter me. In true Hip Hop tradition, I remixed it and created The Dope Kid.

I started The Dope Kid to revolutionize books! I ❤️ #HipHop !! I want an alternative for all the people like myself that love Hip Hop but can’t share all of it with their children.

The Dope Kid is my brand to refashion children’s books and using Hip Hop as my catalyst.

Through my journey with The Dope Kid, I amplify and highlight Hip Hop themed books, however that goes hand in hand with amplifying Hip Hop children’s musicians. And with The Dope Kid, I have come across some pretty dope children musicians.

Here I highlight some of my favorite children’s musicians that represent diversity.

Healthy Hip Hop

I have been a fan of Healthy Hip Hop since is was the first cd I bought in 2016 under Rappin Roy and Reggie Regg (click here to check that music out). And I am even more excited how they have elevated the game for children’s hip hop music.

Healthy Hip Hop is more than music. It’s a movement. Make sure to get the “Music streaming and social platform aimed at providing quality, relevant sounding hip hop for families. Download our app today on IOS (beta)”

I could go on about Healthy Hip Hop FOREVER because I really love everything about it as do my kids, so just read more about them on my post here.

Kymberly Stewart

I can’t remember how I found Kymberly Stewart but I am so glad that I did. This Oakland, CA native creates super fun and contagious music that all children enjoy. Her debut original children’s EP, Giggles and Curls can be found here! My children really love the song “I Am A Robot”

Check me out on her Thankful Box series!

Alphabet Rockers

You don’t know children music, if you haven’t heard of the Alphabet Rockers !! This group is so dope and revolutionary, we have seen them in PERSON!!!

Alphabet Rockers Concert in 2018

“ALPHABET ROCKERS make music that makes change. Founded by Kaitlin McGaw (she/her) and Tommy Shepherd (he/him/they), this intergenerational group creates brave spaces to shape a more equitable world through hip hop.”

We are Superfans of this group and know that you will love them too! Oh yea, THEY WERE NOMINATED FOR A GRAMMY TWICE!!!

Uncle Devin Show

Uncle Devin is a pioneer in Black children’s music. He is a drumcussionist and teacher. We had the pleasure of meeting Uncle Devin at one of his performances. It was a lot of fun and engaging. My daughter sometimes randomly sings his theme song and loves to “do the onion dance.” You can always hear him on Wednesday on his podcast and stream his radio station, weenationradio !!

Ms Niki

Ms. Niki’s Music Class is a virtual music classroom, on Youtube. When the world opens again, Ms. Niki is at the top of list of performers to go see.
