Angel Friends: Let Your Smile Shine

Tara Williams -Let Your Smile Shine Angel Friend Children’s book

In this beautifully illustrated book, the story begins with India and Aria venturing into their first day of school after summer vacation. Aria is a tad bit worried about this new experience, however her Angel friend, Julia reassures her and India that everything will be okay. The story continues with each student in Aria and Julia’s class having to write about their summer experience and share it with the class. When it is Aria turn to share, she explains how she had surgery over the summer and now has a scar. This experiences intrigues that other students, however one student, Livvy chooses to tease Aria about her scar. Ultimately, India stands up for Aria to stop the bullying and teasing by Livvy with the help of another Angel friend, Michael.

This book is a wonderful teaching tool for any parent and educator. It provides a very simple and easy way to combat the nastiness of bullying. The Angel friend, Michael, provides a beautiful mantra in the book for anyone that is being teased or bullied.

I will smile, and I will shine. Look at me, I’m just fine. I won’t let you bring me down. You won’t even see me frown. I will smile, and I will shine. Look at me, I’m just fine!

This is such a powerful statement and is extremely impactful. Anyone can apply this saying to their daily lives. It really resonated with me and made me feel fearless and empowered to do anything. I can only imagine how transformative that statement can be to a child.

This book not only confronts the issue of bullying, but it also allows children the right to speak up when they see something that is not right. It empowers children not to be silent when they witness wrongdoing.

I would highly recommend this book to any parent or elementary school educator. I love that at the end of the book, it is written as a script and can be acted out in a classroom or home environment. Additionally, it is especially important for children to see children with differences and of different ethnicities as being no different.  The character’s represented in this book exemplify diversity and inclusion.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day
2019 (1/25/19) is in its 6th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
